I’m always thinking about creating…..

Using various mediums, techniques and technology to create is something that has always naturally inspired me.

One of my favourite quotes is from Miles Davis -

I'm always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning... Every day I find something creative to do with my life

It was while painting Miles Davis that I discovered he loved to paint and was an amazing artist. His paintings are something that I like as much as his music.

This is something I added to the piece by paint dripping from the trumpet and the quote is so great I had to add that too. I think this also tells more of a story and adds something else to the painting, showing another side to a person that they might not be known for.

Or I might add a journey to a painting. Using small, almost hidden imagery to add more of a story to the bigger picture

Painting

Painting on glass is a technique that has been around for many years and finding new ways to use this medium to create a truly original and unique finish is something that inspires me. Using low iron (for colour clarity) toughened glass gives a solid piece with ultimate clarity and bold colour.

A mixture of paint, silver gilding and many layers are used to create a piece with impact and that reacts well with light. The use of a knife to scrape away paint and add more is another part of the technique that is key to my work.

Sometimes I will paint the piece with the intention of light being shone through the glass to almost project an image or a different colour in a room.

I have painted on many different surfaces like canvas, wood and metal. But I have so much more to explore by painting on glass and this is a journey I’m enjoying being on.

Inspiration

Paintng

I paint what I feel and feel what I paint.

My first memory of seeing a painting and being mesmerised by it was at a gallery in Madrid, I stood next to Guernica - Pablo Picasso. I was pretty young but I can still see it in my minds eye. Apart from the size, it was the way the painting looked that really appealed to me, recognising familiar shapes and working out what was going on took me on a journey. Even though I didn’t understand it at the time I felt there was something deep to this painting and finding out the history and the reason the piece being created opened up the world of art in a whole new way.

I like people to get close to a painting and see every mark and stroke and with my work I like the movement and feeling that the piece has just been finished and is still drying. Letting the paint mix and flow is something that I explore constantly, always looking for a new process to create that unique finish.

I also love Pollocks work, how free he was as an artist but still having work that made a deep impact on people. Again the size is something that is impressive in itself, but it’s the layering up of paint and using the moment to create something fresh and new.

Cinematography

Cinemagraphs/moving photos are something that lets me capture a moment with a little depth to the story in the photo. Like with painting I find that digging deeper usually reveals something interesting and otherwise unknown to the viewer.

I like to capture the moment and use the tools nearest to me. Sometimes I’ll have my DSLR Camera but 95% of the time I use my iPhone..

Most people always have their phone on them and I think using a phone camera gives everyone the same tool and then you focus more on the idea and pushing what these amazing pieces of technology can do. I like the idea of people having the same tools to make something and see how different each piece would be.

Similar to a guitar…every riff, song or solo is played on a bit of wood with 6 strings that is the same for everyone in every country no matter what language you speak or how much you…everything you need is infront of you. It doesn’t matter if it costs £50 or £5000 it will still allow to to create, it just comes down to how the tools around you are used.

iphone art and photography

Simliar to cinemagraphs I use the tools that are around me and capture photographs. My iPhone allows me get great shots quickly that I might otherwise miss if I had to use a bigger camera.
